Building Your Home Business in a Positive Environment With a Mentor

Remember your parent's interest in who you were hanging out with? They knew that who you spent time with was going to play a major role in who you ultimately became. We are very much products of our environments as much as we are genetics. As a supervisor of student teachers, in one of my previous experiences in education, my first advice as they went out was always, "Stay out of the teachers' lounge." Why? Because, the teacher's lounge is quite simply the most negative place in any school. You hear all the complaints about this student and that one, the principal, superintendent and school board. I just didn't want them to begin their teaching careers in a vacuum of negativity.

One of the hardest things for many of the people who are trying to create income from a non-traditional avenue, like a network marketing company, is that they are constantly being bombarded with negative support. Friends, family and others just shake their head and tell them that this can't possibly work (forget the fact that they could pick up the phone and speak with countless individuals who are no longer fighting traffic, asking permission for vacation and can set their own work hours). It's difficult to remain motivated when faced with this kind of negativity, and if it's a spouse that is continually pushing for them to give up it's nearly impossible and many unfortunately don't stay with it.

Why do so many people seem to be more than willing to pile on the negative support for your dream of having your own business and financial security? Fear! Fear that you will succeed and they will be proven wrong. Fear that the confidence that success breeds may change you as a person. And, finally, it may just be good old-fashioned jealousy. They see someone that had the courage to try something that they wouldn't and when they see you starting to succeed, they really pour on the negativity in a last ditch effort to derail the dream. Stay away from the dream killers.

The importance of the environment we surround ourselves with doesn't diminish with time. Even when we become adults we still need to guard against the negativity that can creep in if we let it, and the best way to prevent that is to have someone who is a positive force that we can continue to learn from. The quickest way to success and maintaining a positive attitude in any venture, but especially when it comes to building an income from home, is to find someone who has attained what you desire and hang out with them, absorbing as much of their philosophy and habits as possible. If you can somehow convince them to be an active mentor to you, you're definitely on the road to success.

Build a network of support for whatever goals you have. Find someone who can mentor you through the project and take the action they recommend. They've done what you want to, so who better to get advice from? Many people hate the thought of asking someone else for help or advice, thinking erroneously that they need to have all the answers and "do it on their own." Let me clue you in on something. Anyone who says, "I accomplished this all on my own", is either ignorant or a liar. No great accomplishment has ever been a solo activity, that's why you should have no problem looking to others for help and support.

Finding a mentor, who has navigated the waters you are about to enter, is the single most important thing you can do to insure the success of your home business. Why flail around making mistakes that could have been avoided, had you just been provided some guidance from someone who's already accomplished what you want to?

One of the great things about being in a network marketing business is the team work and mentors that are built in as you build. Everyone brings something different to the table, so your mentor for one aspect of the business, as lead generation, may not be the same mentor you would seek out if you had questions regarding products, but you can typically find someone with the right answer and willingness to work with you somewhere in your team.

So, make your home business environment as free of negativity as possible and find yourself a mentor who can provide you the guidance you need to accomplish the goals you have set for your business.

If You Don't Change Your Life, Who Will?

The human mind is an amazing thing. It can motivate you with imagination, or helplessly paralyze you with fear. Most people are where they are in life because that is where their mind tells them they are supposed to be. Every day you can find people with amazing abilities stuck in dead end jobs, while others with half their skill set are making millions.

You truly have the ability to change your life for the better any time you decide you've had enough with your current situation, and it all starts with what's going on in the space between your ears. As soon as you banish from your mind the words of failure; can't, won't, and fear, replacing them with can, will and courage, you're on track to changing the current course of your life. It's amazing what kind of change you can perpetuate in your life once you believe in your mind that you can accomplish something. It's why you hear life coaches; whether they are fitness, financial, or business, preach the value of sitting goals and visualizing yourself already accomplishing them, even before you've taken the first step toward attaining them. They know that if you can visualize success in your mind, the hardest part is over.

Unfortunately, human beings find it much easier to visualize the negative than the positive. We tell ourselves that we can't get the promotion, we'll never have the money to live the life we want, and we won't be able to retire early. And, we're not surprised when each of these becomes fact. Many erroneously believe it's wrong to imagine good things for themselves, when having the things we want most in life needs to be attained first in our minds and clearly pictured every step of the way in order to get to the goal line.

Like the junior high boy who doesn't go ask the pretty girl sitting across the gym floor to dance because he's already faced the embarrassment of rejection in his mind, many of us go through life never taking the risks that would have led to success, for exactly the same reason. It's much easier to tell ourselves that we'll never get a break, aren't good enough, weren't born into the right family or circumstance, or any number of other excuses.

If you seriously aren't happy with where you are in life, you are in possession of the most amazing asset you will ever need to change your circumstances, and it's been there all the time. Make a conscious effort to identify the negative images that you have in your mind, that are holding you back, and replace them with positive images of success. You may be really mad at yourself at first when your life begins to take an upward swing, realizing you had this power all along, but it's never too late to find the happiness and success you deserve. Plus, knowing it was you who was responsible means you now have the recipe for a rich future, and it begins in your mind.

The Importance of Building Residual Income the Right Way

One of the key aspects to owning a home based business should be the opportunity to build "residual" income. As a regular worker, you get paid a set amount of money for a set amount of time. If you want more money, you need to work more hours, or find a different job that pays you more money for the hours you work, but once you've been paid for your work, you need to work more if you want more income. It's a vicious cycle. Getting involved in a network marketing business gives you the opportunity to work hard in the beginning years of your enterprise, with the promise of being paid over and over again for the effort you put into your business.

One of the reasons I advocate building your network marketing business as a team, and supporting the people you sponsor into it to assure they are also successful, is you want them to stay and keep their monthly purchase of products (autoship), since that's part of the volume you'll be getting paid for. Many successful salesmen fail at network marketing because they are so good at recruiting people into the business that as soon as they sign someone up, they are on to the next, without stopping to offer support to the person they just signed up. What they wind up with is a business that is crumbling behind them (with frustrated people dropping out and canceling their monthly autoships). In the end, they fail because they didn't "build" their business the right way to assure that everyone is successful and that residual income is built, not just for themselves, but for everyone who is willing to commit to building a serious business.

I suggest you work with no more than 4-5 people at a time. Once you've attracted 4-5 people that you wish to sponsor, stop looking for more people to join your business and concentrate your efforts on helping them find and sponsor their own 4-5 people, and right on down at least four levels. Once you've helped a person you sponsored to build their business down 3-4 levels deep, you have done three things:

  1. You have built residual income for yourself, the person you sponsored and the people they have sponsored, as all of you have a number of people below you purchasing products on a monthly basis.
  2. You have trained the people you sponsored to follow your lead and not abandon their people until they have achieved a specific level of success. This will keep them excited about the business, show them the power of teamwork, and set an example that will permeate your entire business, as your efforts are repeated.
  3. You will build stability into your business by using this model and will see few, if any, serious about building a business leave.
Once you have assisted a person you have sponsored to develop their business down at least 3 levels, you are now free to go find a new person to sponsor and work with in the same manner. By following this plan, by the time you are ready to go out and start looking for your second group of 4-5 people to work with, you will have a significant residual income already coming into your bank account, which makes being selective about the people you work with much easier. Also, you'll be surprised how fast the part of your business that you just finished working with continues to grow, as your example is replicated over and over.

Residual income that allows you to eventually decide how much, if any, time you want to continue to use to build your business is the ultimate goal. Building the right way will assure that you begin receiving residual income from early in your business and it continues to grow steadily. Of course it's nice to get those big volume numbers you typically get when you sponsor a new person into your business, but if you constantly have to find someone new to get paid because people are leaving as fast as you're bringing them in, that sounds a lot like working a traditional job to me. This is a game plan for building residual income that will in the end make for a much stronger, lasting business, and that's the goal that you should have in sight.

Can Sponsoring Just 5 People Really Make You Big Money?

Many people who look at network marketing as a business are convinced that they need to be able to recruit hundreds of people into their downline in order to make "walk away from your job" money. When in truth, that really isn't the case. Now, don't get me wrong, if you are one of those who can recruit hundreds, you will obviously do well and be a real star in your company, but you can get there with far fewer as well.

Depending on how your company's compensation plan is set up, it may take as few as 2 personally recruited people to really get your business off to a flying start, though I'd suggest you set your sights a little higher and have a goal to get 5 people into your business that you have personally sponsored, and then work on training them to get their 5 people as quickly as possible. If you are successful in attracting just 5 people and training them to do the same, your business will expand at an amazing rate, as you see the duplication of your efforts take place in those you brought in. Then you are free to look for your next 5 sponsorships.

Many who come into the industry of network marketing get caught up in the products, and yes, having good products are vital and I wouldn't join an opportunity that didn't have quality, consumable products. But, it's the business opportunity that's going to create the kind of income that you joined for. So, you're looking for people just like you. Along the way you'll find people who aren't right for the business, but love the products, and you can add them as customers, but don't take your eye off the ball and forget that your primary targets are people who want the same financial freedom you are looking for.

Sometimes You Have to Say "NO"

The faster you find people who want to join your business, the faster you begin to make money, but there are some people you need to say no to, even though they say they want to join. Not everyone is right for this industry, and the faster you learn how to identify them, the better. I never "convince" anyone to join my business opportunity, and you shouldn't either. If you have to "convince" them to join, you'll find yourself pouring time into "convincing" them to actually get started building their business, when you could be working with those that are serious. Look for someone who is eager to get started, can't wait to get their first sign-up into their business, are going to call you often with serious questions on how to build their business and will be bringing legitimate prospects to you for three-way calls when needed. Think of yourself as the "Marines of Network Marketing". You're looking for a few good men and women!

Summary

Many times you hear network marketing referred to as "a numbers game", but the reality is that the numbers needed to build a successful business aren't that large, if you concentrate on finding those that truly want to replicate what you teach them. Now, I don't suggest you find 5 good people and then stop recruiting, though you could if they are following your lead. Once you see the kind of growth that can come from the efforts of just a few quality representatives being added to your business, you'll want to find even more.

Achieving the Home Business Mind-Set

One of the hardest things for many, who have spent their lives working a job and have decided to start their own home business, is to get out of the "worker" mindset and into that of an entrepreneur. Face it, we've been indoctrinated all our lives to "work hard", "go to school", "find a good job with security". That's the recipe that we got first from our parents, then our teachers and then you're further reminded of it by employers, who like to frequently remind you to keep your nose to the grindstone so as not to jeopardize "what you have". But, just what do you have working for someone else?

Today's Reality
 
Look around. Good people who have followed the advice above are losing jobs, homes and life savings at an alarming rate as the economy of the United States teeters on the brink. What about those who have already entered their "Golden Years" and are now finding out that the economic crisis has devastated the savings they thought would be enough to carry them through the rest of their lives? These are all people who played by the "rules" that had been laid out to them all their lives and are now finding out that nothing was guaranteed. Yet, many businesses are recording record profits.
 
A Shift in Thinking
 
We've all heard it from a boss at one point or another, "Come on, time is money!" What they mean is, "You taking too much time is costing me money!" The longer it takes you to get something done, the longer it takes for the company you work for to convert your efforts into money. You, on the other hand, are most likely being paid a set salary, for a set number of hours and have little incentive to work harder, except for the threat of having your income taken away.
 
1. As a home business owner, the first mind set change that you should look to achieve is to think not in terms of "Time is Money", but rather "Money is Time!" When you have a successful home business, you will have invested time upfront for an income that will pay you over and over for that work and provide you with the kind of time freedom that you can only dream of as a traditional employee. Having a residual income that comes in week after week, for the work you've already done, is a powerful benefit of owning a home business and it will allow you time to enjoy family, friends and hobbies, as most successful home business owners only work a few hours a day and then have the rest for themselves.

2. Second on your list of mind shifts should be what most people envision when they think of being a business owner. They see a brick and mortar building, hundreds of thousands for start-up costs, thousands more each month for overhead, employee headaches, etc. I see no difference between being tied to that type of business than to being a traditional employee, as both are slaves, just to different masters. You need to picture in your mind a business who's start-up cost could honestly be funded with one good yard sale of stuff you no longer use, has over head that is tied to products you will be using on a monthly basis (or sharing with others) and can quickly be paid for by the initial income of the business. Most importantly, you want a business that can be done from virtually anywhere you have access to a phone and internet connection and not one that forces you to leave home or give up vacations to oversee.

3. Finally, you want to picture a business that will eventually allow you to walk away knowing it will run on autopilot, providing you with income on a weekly basis, while you enjoy life.

To the traditional worker, or even traditional business owner, the points outlined above are far removed from the mindset that they have been taught to embrace. But, for millions that have discovered the power that a home business offers, they are willing to put in the work needed to change their mindset and learn the skill set needed to be successful, and working from home is simply the best decision they ever made. Those that succeed in changing the picture of the world of work and business that they were taught to embrace have found that their decision to own a home business can provide them the most important commodity they can ever have, time. Time is something we can never get back. Unfortunately, you hear all the time about people who had to miss key events in the lives of their family for the sake of work. Imagine if you never had to make the choice between work and family again, and it was just a mind-set change away.
 
Summary
 
Owning your own home business requires a major shift in the way you think about work. Those that are able to successfully make the move from being an employee to sharing their home business and its opportunity to others, would never go back. You owe it to yourself to at least explore if owning your own home business is right for you.

Cost of Starting a Home Based Business

When dealing with a new prospect looking to start a home based business, I know very quickly how serious they are based on their concern (or lack thereof) over the cost of getting started. The truth is there is nowhere else that I know where you can start a legitimate business for what it costs to get involved in a network marketing opportunity. Ever looked into starting a franchise business such as McDonald's? You'll pay over $10,000 just for the right to have a franchise, start up costs (building, equipment, etc.) will most likely cost upwards to $250,000, then you have your monthly overhead for food, labor and utilities. By comparison, a network marketing company's startup cost shouldn't be a major concern.  Focus instead on the other aspects that will determine just how good the opportunity itself is.  I'm far more concerned with the management team leading the company and the compensation plan that will determine my success and that of others I might bring into the business, than on the costs involved in getting started in a network marketing company.

Start-up Costs

Most network marketing companies will offer those interested in starting a business several choices on how to get started, usually referred to as "start-up packages". The lower package may be around a couple hundred dollars, while the upper is usually around a thousand. As packages get larger, you get more in return, as in more products to sample, more business building tools, etc. For the cost, I highly recommend you start with the highest package you can at the time, as the benefits you get, that will help you hit the ground running, are well worth the cost (which we've already established is minimal compared to traditional business start-up costs).  Plus, keep in mind that as you introduce the business opportunity to others, they will ask, "Which package did you start with?"  It's much easier to build your business if those you bring in are following your lead and entering with one of the better packages, rather than the lowest one available.

Monthly Overhead

When you become part of a network marketing opportunity you will be required to maintain a monthly shipment of products (usually around $75-$100). This is referred to as an "autoship", because it is sent to you automatically each month. You will have the opportunity to customize your shipment each month to receive the products you want, and these can be used personally or resold at retail prices (you will be paying wholesale). The only other overhead you would have for your business will be if you choose to market it through ads, or elect to purchase leads looking for a business opportunity. You totally control how much you spend on this type of activity and I recommend you keep it small until you are seeing a steady income from your business.  Start by sharing with people you know, who you'd like to build your business with, then you can get involved in other avenues of marketing.

Tax Benefits

One of the things that many people don't consider are the tax benefits associated with owning a home based business can be significant, and many economic advisers, like New York Times Best Selling Author Robert Kiyosaki, (Rich Dad, Poor Dad) highly recommend them. Your startup cost for the package you select will be tax deductable. You will be using your phone (both landline and cell) and the internet to build your business, which makes both of these costs now tax deductable. If you have the ability to set up a home office in a dedicated portion of your house (not a corner of your spare bedroom), the percentage of your house that the office occupies is tax deductable for that cost of your rent or mortgage and monthly utilities. Be sure to consult your tax attorney or CPA to make sure that you are taking legitimate deductions, but a home business can have very significant tax advantages.  At some point, once you really start making money with your business, you will want to look into starting your own corporation.  It's not difficult to do and the tax benefits are something you really want to take advantage of to get the most benefit out of owning your own business.

Summary

While there are a number of things you should look for when selecting a network marketing opportunity to get involved with; management team, compensation plan, and quality products, the start-up cost should be way down the list of considerations. The truth is, most people can pull together all the things sitting unused in their house, hold a one-day garage sale and put together the cost of getting started in a network marketing business at the highest costing package available. There simply isn't another avenue for you to become the owner of a business at so minimal a cost that also holds the potiential to provide you a serious income, give you the freedom to live your life on your terms, and be an asset that you can pass on to your children or grandchildren, as getting started in a network marketing opportunity can provide.

Keys To Selecting Your Network Marketing Business

Selecting a network marketing company to begin your home based business can be a daunting task for someone unfamiliar with the industry. While few options offer the advantages that a network marketing business does when it comes to cost to get started, low overhead and potential for economic rewards, finding the right opportunity is key to success. Many network marketers find they have had to join a number of companies before finding the right one. There are some keys to look for to help you find the right business quickly, if you know what they are.

Company Leadership:

Sound company leadership, like any business, should be a key item examined when selecting an opportunity to get involved with. Longevity of the company is something that is a must. Who wants to put the effort into creating a large team of distributors and customers, only to have the company go out of business, taking your paycheck with it? Leadership with proven experience and a long history of success in the network marketing industry is something that should be examined prior to signing up with any business opportunity. There is nothing more important than the management of the company when it comes to selecting an opportunity that is right for you. The potential for large income payouts is what draws people, rightly so, to network marketing, but you want that to be longterm income, not something that you enjoy today and it's gone tomorrow. Management sets the tone for the company and will be responsible for the future growth of it and your business, as they bring on new products, open international markets, and determine the course that will be navigated in the future.

Compensation Plan:

There are a number of compensation plans that populate the network marketing industry, and there isn't sufficient space here to discuss them all. But, there are some key things that should be examined when you are considering joining a company.
  1. Does the compensation plan offer those new to the business an opportunity to make money quickly? There is no better feeling than getting that first check when you start your business, and the faster that happens, the more excited the person is to work their business, and more importantly remain with the business. The one big knock against the network marketing industry is the number of people who start a business, but quickly fall away. Ensuring that new distributors make money quickly is a must.
  2. Does the compensation plan encourage teamwork for the long term? Many plans are set up to financially encourage distributors to work with people in their business when they first join, but then, as the business grows and those people end up in a portion that is so large that the distributor above no longer has an incentive to work with them. Look for a pay plan that rewards you for working with you entire team, longterm, regardless of how large your business grows. Of course, you are also interested in a compensation plan that will offer you serious financial rewards for your work, but I believe that if you find one that encourages the type of teamwork I've described, the financial rewards will go hand in hand.
Consumable Products:

High quality, consumable products that customers will want on a regular basis, should be the basis for any decision to start a business in the network marketing industry. Let's face it, you can be the best bowling ball salesman in the world, but realistically you'll see very few repeat customers. Products that enhance the lives of customers, are needed on a regular basis and are of a quality that you are confident in and proud to represent, will give you the vehicle you need to build a business that is based not just on distributors you sponsor, but consumers that are the true foundation of your financial success.

Summary:

While there are other items to look at when selecting a network marketing opportunity that is right for you, I firmly believe that these are the ones that should be examined the closest. I see no other opportunity for everyday people to inexpensively begin their own business, where the potential for financial rewards are greater, than the network marketing industry. Do your homework; select the business that's right for you and GO FOR IT!

Do You Wonder If Network Marketing Really Works?

The most common question I get, when talking to someone about beginning their own business, is "Does network marketing really work?" For most people unfamiliar with the industry, they find it hard to believe that building a large network of people isn't next to impossible. The fact is, everyone is involved in network marketing right now, and they are just not getting paid for it.

Have you ever found a restaurant that is just so good that you have to return over and over again? All of us have. And, what is your first reaction when you realize just how good this restaurant is; you want to share it with your friends. Now, not all of your friends will find the food there as good as you do, but many will, and they will share it with their friends as well. The truth is most businesses rely as much on word of mouth recommendations as they do on traditional marketing and advertisement. Now, wouldn't it be nice if, for your recommendation, the restaurant paid you a small percentage of what your friends spend there? What if you got paid a smaller percentage for those your friends recommended, since after all, you are responsible for them being there as well?
